A Game for Transforming Taiwan Companies

Abstract:

Taiwan companies have long been used to growing on its own, and for the past few decades they have done so well with this organic-growth pattern that they have paid much less attention to Mergers and Acquisitions - the other key engine to drive corporate growth. Nevertheless, Taiwan companies are now facing an ever challenging time, worsened by the fierce competition from China and the severe deterioration of global economy. The need for industry consolidation and expansion via M&A has never been more acute for Taiwan companies.

Taiwan’s semiconductor industry, a mainstay of the island’s economy, is one of the most affected industries by China’s aggressive attempts to grow its own ICT industries, and the island’s 200-plus IC design houses in particular see an urgent need for consolidation to compete, if not just to survive. The consolidation of Taiwan’s DRAM industry in 2012 has proved a success. Now it’s time for the IC design sector to step up efforts in that direction.

Jack J.T. Huang, one of the most-respected M&A lawyers in Asia, is to present his observations on the challenges faced by the Taiwan companies and the strategies such companies may consider to transform themselves through M&A.

The global semiconductor industry has seen a wave of consolidation this year, and it is difficult for Taiwan semiconductor companies to buck the trend. Mr.Huang’s presentation can provide the business leaders with some good food for thought.
